This modern-day classic follows Charli, an inquisitive and delightful girl, on a heartwarming journey of discovery loved by children, parents, teachers, and librarians.
When Charli and her classmates meet the landscape architect who designed the new community park, Charli can’t stop wondering what it would be like to be a landscape architect herself.
“‘Will we make a design like that?’ Charli asked.
’Yes!’ replied Ms. Martin. ‘We’ll use a CAD program, which means Computer Aided Design.’
Raising her eyebrows, Charli asked, ‘Oh, is CAD like the art app on my tablet?’
’Similar,’ Ms. Martin answered. ‘Your art app lets you sketch, color, and print what you design, right?’
’Right,’said Charli.
’The big difference with CAD,’ explained Ms. Martin, ‘is that it also creates 3D, or 3-dimensional, designs. Right now, the design on the classroom screen looks flat, doesn’t it?’
Charli nodded.
Ms. Martin said, ‘When I convert it to a 3D design, it’s no longer flat—I can see all of its sides. Watch this!’
Her 3D design of the new park rotated on the classroom screen, letting everyone see it from all different angles. They even looked down at it, as if they were floating above it!
‘I even printed it using a 3D printer!’ added Ms. Martin, revealing the mysterious object.
’That’s awesome!’ Charli exclaimed.
Her mind raced! Could she design a park with CAD? What kind of park could she design?
As Ms. Martin answered more questions, Charli’s mind wandered. Soon, she was lost in a designing daydream.”
